PANJIM: The Goa Football Development Council (GFDC) made its way into Ambaulim, Quepem with the inauguration of its 22nd training centre in State.
Fr Ubaldo Fernandes, parish priest of Ambaulim thanked GFDC for its support. Nicholas Rodrigues, winger of Mumbai Football Club urged the parents to encourage their children to take up and enjoy football.
Explaining the motive of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar of setting up GFDC, Elvis Gomes said, “getting more children trained scientifically so that playing for India at the Olympics would be an opportunity. We are now training over 2,900 children and intent training even more.”
“The responsibility of the children is to take India to the World Cup,” added Elvis, GFDC’s member secretary.
Earlier in the day, over hundred boys and girls coached at Cuncolim Union centre were distributed football kit by GFDC. The kit included football shoes, shin guards, jersey and shorts.
The training camp at Cuncolim commenced on January 5 and ever since, the participation has grown.
Fr Valerian Andrade, parish priest of Cuncolim was the chief guest.
Nicholas was also present with other footballers such as Sporting Clube de Goa’s Keenan Almeida and Churchill Bros SC’s Micky Fernandes. They shared their inputs with the youngsters of Cuncolim.
