GM Shyam wins All-India chess, Goa’s Ritviz finishes 2nd

PANJIM: Top seeded GM Shyam Sunder (2488) of Tamil Nadu won the Hotel Calangute Tower All Rapid Rating Chess Tournament organized by Mormugao Taluka Chess Association (MTCA), at the Centenary Hall, Baina-Vasco, recently.

Sunder secured eight points at the end of nine rounds and bagged a cash prize of Rs 25,000 and winner’s trophy. Goa’s Ritviz Parab (2163) of Geno Pharma was the runner-up with eight points on lower tie-breaker. IM Abhimanyu Puranik (2208) of Maharashtra finished third also with eight points on lower tie-breaker.
GM Shyam won seven games and was held for a draw by Goa’s IM Rohan Ahuja (2149) of Geno Pharma and Chander Raju (1840) of Kerala. Ritviz won eight games and lost one game to Gahan M G (2296) Karnataka.
Goa’s upcoming player Amey Audi defeated GM Tejas Bhakre and IM Abhimanyu Puranik scoring seven points but stood seventh. Rohan Ahuja defeated GM Tejas Bhakre in the sixth round and held winner Shyam for a draw to stand eight. The second GM of tournament, Tejas Bhakre suffered defeats from Rohan and Amey, had to settle for the 11th position. 
In all seven players from Goa came in prize list and it was good performance by Goan players and 22 got rating in this tournament. Subramanian T V of Tamil Nadu won vetaran prize, stole the limelight with his age of 83 years playing this tournament.
The trophies and prizes were awarded by the chief guest Alina Saldhana,   Minister for RDI, Science, Technology and Museum during the prize distribution function. 
Alina in her address expressed the role of children and was satisfied with the parents showing keen interest in overall development of their children by devoting time as most of the participants were small children.
Others present for the prize distribution were: Krishna (Daji) Salkar, councillor of Mormugao Municipality; Joint Secretary of AICF Kishor Bandekar, organizing secretary Vasant Naik, Pundalik Nayak VP of MTCA; Adv Anita Thorat, treasurer of MTCA; Achut Naik, joint secretary of MTCA; Anil Patil, Mukesh Adhia members of MTCA; Ashesh Keni and Sagar Sacordekar VP of GCA; Balakrishna, treasurer of TTCA. 
The tournament was conducted by Pramod Mori, chief arbiter under the assistance of Sanjay Kavlekar, Swapnil Hoble, Vasant Naik, Dattaram Pinge and other assistants. 
Girish Kolamkar compered while Pundalik Nayak proposed the vote of thanks.
