Goa held by Maharashtra in goals galore

Aditya Jha’s hat-trick helped Gujarat maul Daman and Diu 5-0.

MARGAO: Maharashtra rallied from behind to hold ten-man Goa in a 5-5 draw in their West Zone Coca Cola Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy sub junior football championship, at Holy Trinity ground, Benaulim, on Thursday. Goa were leading 4-1 at the break.
The high light of the day were a brilliant hat-trick by Goa skipper Borris D’Mello and Maharashtra’s Kamran Ansari.
Goa opened the scoring in the 26th minute when midfielder Jovino D’Mello sent in a through ball to Borris, who outwitted couple of defenders and beat Maharashtra goalkeeper Pranesh Thamba with a snap shot.
Borris doubled the lead in the 35th minute and  completed his hat-trick in the 37th minute.
Substitute Arron Baretto got his first goal and team’s fourth goal in the 38th minute.
However, Maharashtra reduced the deficit in injury time when Kamran’s well measured cross was beautifully headed home by Amar Kiran Pure which gave no chance to Goa goalkeeper Askhad.
Post resumption, Goa suffered a jolt in the 62nd minute when defender Janio Fernandes received a second yellow card as he pushed rival player Clivert Miller inside the box and referee showed the dreaded spot.
Clivert himself took the resultant spot kick to send the rival goalkeeper in the wrong way.
In the 68th minute, Kamran punted the ball to the far corner of the net and two minutes later, he scored his brace.
Kamran scored his third goal and the team’s fifth goal in the 81st minute to register his hat-trick.
With time running out, Goa made last ditch efforts but Shane Gracias’ shot was parried away by rival goalkeeper for a flag kick. The resultant flag kick taken by Arron Baretto was nodded home by Aroon Alvares to bring sigh of relief to the Goa bench to level the score at fag end.
In another match, a five goal blitz including a hat-trick by Aditya Jha helped Gujarat maul Daman and Diu 5-0.
