Goa Maroons emerge champs

Hosts Goa Maroons trounced CRC Chinchinim 5-1 to retain the prestigious Goan Overseas Association Rolling Trophy in the finals sponsored by Bassem International Trading Company (Charles D’Sa), and conducted under the auspices of Kuwait India Football Federation (KIFF) at MOH ground, Kuwait, recently. Goa Maroons led 3-1 at half time.
Making their first appearance in a tournament final for Goan teams, CRCC took time to settle down while Goa Maroons began on a positive note and kept mounting pressure on the CRCC defence.
Goa Maroons were rewarded in the 17th minute when an Elvis’ cross from the right flank was chested by Kennedy leaving Gaby to slot in from close range. Eight minutes later, CRCC should have been on level terms when Joywin’s header off a corner beat Goa Maroon’s goalkeeper Anthony but Goa Maroons captain Ian cleared the ball on the goalline.
Eleven minutes later, Elvis, switching positions, firmly struck the second goal for Goa Maroons off a long ranger. Four minutes before the break, Kennedy’s cross from the left flank beat the CRCC defence, leaving Gaby to tap in.
Changing over, CRCC began on a positive move and pulled one back through Edwin. Within minutes, Steven of Goa Maroons scored. Kennedy rounded of the tally for Goa Maroons in the dying minutes.
Charles D’Sa, general manager of Bassem International Trading, who sponsored the tournament for the seventh consecutive year, gave away the prizes. CRCC received individual trophies from Fidelis Fernandes, president, KIFF. Gabriel Fernandes received the man-of-the match prize. Raymond D’Sa, President, Goan Overseas Association proposed the vote of thanks.
