DABOLIM: Goa Naval Area will be organising Olympic triathlon, with aircraft flying overhead in the running and cycling event, to be held at INS Hansa, on January 14.
“This is the first time that we are undertaking an Olympic triathlon in Goa Naval Area. The Olympic triathlon has a standard distance – 1.5 km of swimming in the sea, 40 km of cycling and 10 km running. The participants have to register online at the Commanding Officer, INS Hansa, Dabolim,” Commodore Biplab Hota told reporters here.
“The swimming will be conducted at a private beach. There won’t be anyone else on the beach, so we will be able to organise it the way we want. Thereafter, the cycling route is on the new Sada flyover route, which is I think among the best in the country today. The scenic beauty of that route can’t be found in most of the other places,” Commodore Hota said.
“The final part of the event is running, which will happen inside INS Hansa. You’ll be running next to the runway where aircraft will be taking off and landing.,” the INS Hansa CO said.
“Since we are going to operate from inside the base, entry will be restricted to the participants. But in case a participant wants to bring a person along with him or her, the participant should inform us well in advance. So that the passes could be made in time. And the person will have restricted access. He or she won’t be allowed to move around randomly,” he said.
“Flights won’t be affected as the running will be happening on the road, which is anyway having traffic movement. Participants will have to get their own cycles. The Navy won’t be able to provide it,” he said.
Duathlon will be cycling 40 km and running 10 km.
There are a total 133 participants. Standard cut-off time for the Olympic Triathlon is four-and-a-half hours. For details visit https://www.runbuddies.club/gnatriathlon.html.
