MAPUSA: Goa Police Sports Club’s two first half goals against A A de Moira enabled them to end their campaign in the GFA’s Geno First Division League on a winning note. The match was played at Duler Stadium, here, on Friday.
It was Niraj D’Mello and Shaikh Mouzzan’s goals which gave Goa Police full points which saw then end the GPL with 13 points while Moira ended with 16 points.
After quarter of the match was restricted to midfield, Goa Police Shaikh Mouzzan and Moira’s Klusner Pereira missed open sitters.
As the match progressed, Niraj D’Mello should have put his team ahead in the 26th minute but he was thwarted by Moira’s keeper Preston Rego in a one-to-one situation.
Ten minutes later, Klusner controlled a pass from Llyod Mascarenhas and sent a low cross at the goal to his teammate Faheez Mahammad but the latter failed to keep his short on target.
Finally, Goa Police caught the rival defence on the wrong foot and scored twice in the 39th and 43rd minutes.
Niraj D’Mello opened the account as he drilled a low shot at the far corner of the goal.
At the other end, Moira’s Klusner was thwarted by Police keeper Niklesh Naik. In a counter attack Shaikh Mouzzan collected a through pass from Niraj D’Mello and moved some steps forward and scored with a neat placement to make it 2-0.
On crossing over, Moira squandered two close chances to reduce the margin.
Unmarked Klusner failed to direct his header into the goal while a firm header by Manushawn Fernandes off Rudresh’s corner was punched over the crossbar by Police keeper Niklesh.
In the 66th minute, Police Gulrez Khan was the culprit not to score as he managed to snatch the ball from the feet of Prajyot Kerkar but saw his placement go wide of the mark.
In the last ten minutes of the match, Moira’s Savio Fernandes attempt from close was blocked by Police keeper Niklesh while at the other end Shaikh Mouzzan’s shot at the goal was blocked by Moira keeper Preston.
Referee Prasad Surlekar gave marching orders to Police’s Gulrez Khan for second bookable offense.
Police Niraj D’Mello received the man-of-the-match award from Babli Mandrekar- GFA’s Executive Committee member.
