CALANGUTE: Goa Velha Sports Club prevailed over PVC Association, Parra 4-1 via the tie-breaker to book their place in the finals of 5th Saligao United Cup All-Goa inter- village football tournament organized by Saligao United at Dr Gustavo Monteiro Stadium, Candolim, Tuesday.
Parra could have taken the lead in the 10th minute but Goa Velha keeper Anthony rose to the occasion fisting away a try from Virgilio Lobo.
Goa Velha came close to scoring in the 15th minute but Parra keeper Rohan Pinto came to his side’s rescue fisting away Roydon Camilo’s shot for an abortive corner.
Changing over, the teams tried to score but their forwards missed a couple of scoring opportunities. Parra’s Atish Mirajkar try hit the crossbar and went out of play in the 40th minute while Virgilio’s try sailed inches over the bar.
The winners were decided on penalties. Sidroy Afonso, Melroy D’Silva, Roydon Camilo and Joseph Rodrigues converted for Goa Velha while only Virgilio Lobo could find the net for the losers. Goa Velha now lock horns with Nerul SC in the finals on May 11.
In St Anthony’s Cup soccer, organized by St Anthony’s Sports Club, Marna, at church ground, Siolim, Tuesday, Nerul Sports Club scored a solitary goal victory over Milagres Sports Club to move into the semi- finals.
Nerul began on an attacking note and forged ahead in the 11th minute through Ritesh Gaonkar off a corner. Stung by the reverse, Milagres went all out in search of tthe equalizer but their forwards failed to find the net. Oswino of Milagres was declared man-of-the-match for his tireless efforts.
