Goa Velha SC clinch Gouveia Memorial Cup

MAPUSA: Goa Velha Sports Club had to wait for the penalty shootout where they registered a hard fought 3-2 win over PVC Parra to clinch Pio Jose Gouveia Memorial Cup, inter-village football tournament organised by YSC Colvale, at Colvale church ground, recently.
The match that was attended by a large Sunday crowd went home disappointed as no goals were scored at the end of the regulation time.
In the 20th minute, PVC Parra almost took the lead, but Referee Deep Govekar saw PVC Parra’s Osmiro Trinidad handled the ball before he scored.
On crossing over, this time Goa Velha Sports Club could have gone ahead in the 45th minute but Yogendra Thapa strike was tipped over by the PVC Parra’s keeper Ritesh.
Both the teams pressed hard for a goal but their strikers failed to find the back of the nets, where the match finally ended in a goalless draw.
To decide the winners, the penalty shootout was enforced where for Goa Velha Sports Club colts won by 3-2 margin. For Goa Velha colts Sarjeev Kunkolkar, Lokesh Talwar and Francis Pires were on target while for PVC Parra only Joston Cardozo and Sankesh Harmalkar scored.
Chief guest Minister for Science and Technology Michael Lobo, guest of honour Tivim MLA Nilkant Halarnkar and Servo Fernandes gave away the cash prize of Rs 1 lakh to the winners plus trophy while the runners-up Rs 50,000 plus trophy.
Goa Football Association Executive Committee Members Babli Mandrekar, John Fernandes, Gregory D’Souza, Welwin Menezes and Francis Viegas, Patron of PVC Association, were the special invitees for the final.
Adv Dominic Pereira welcomed and proposed vote of thanks while Santan Ferrao compered the function.
