PANJIM: Goa’s Douglas Lobo displayed fine skill and strategy to emerge second at the 11th iGate International Scrabble Championship, held in Bangalore, recently.
World champion Nigel Richards of New Zealand bagged the top spot.
While Douglas won 23 of the 35 games played, Nigel had 32 in his kitty.
Sri Lankan national champion, Lakshan Wanniarachi finished third with 21 wins .
Two of Douglas’ best plays were Assegais and Eudaemons while Nigel came up with words like Zapateados and Asafetida.
By virtue of this performance Douglas leapfrogged to second position in the Indian ratings, one notch below Sherwin Rodrigues who occupies the top. Sherwin claimed the fourth spot in the iGate tournament with 20 wins and a draw.
The other Goan scrabblers who represented India were Rajiv Antao, Joe Rodrigues, Anthony Gomes, Erol Jorge and Sylvia Coelho.
