PANJIM: Goa’s chess prodigy Ivana Maria Furtado added yet another gold medal in to her cabinet as she emerged champion in the under-18 girl’s Open category event at the Commonwealth Chess Championship in New Delhi, on Tuesday.
Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman secured the silver medal while Meenakshi Subbaraman settled for the bronze medal.
WIM Ivana won four games, drew three wherein she held two International Master’s and lost two games against International Master’s.
The 16-year-old Ivana has won the gold medal at the Commonwealth in the age category for the third time.
Ivana’s earlier success came in Singapore and South Africa. Along with this victory, Ivana has also collected 16 Elo rating points.
Just recently, Ivana had earned 24 Elo points at the International Open Mayor’s Cup held in Mumbai. Her present Elo registers at 2236.
Ivana now proceeds to the National Women’s Challengers to be held at Thane in Maharashtra.
The chess maestro is a student of 11th Science at Our Lady of the Rosary Higher Secondary School, Dona Paula.
Grandmaster and former World Junior champion Abhijeet Gupta won the Commonwealth chess championship after settling for a quick draw with Arghyadip Das in the ninth and final round.
Gupta regained the crown with a very impressive eight points out of a possible nine, winning the first seven games in the championship and drawing the last two with utmost ease.
Arghyadip Das came second winning the silver ahead of M R Lalith Babu who won his game to win the bronze medal.
In the women’s section, Padmini Rout, S Vijayalakshmi and S Meenakshi all won their games to win the medals.
As the tie was resolved Rout won the gold, Vijayalakshmi won the silver while Meenakshi won the bronze medal. Both Vijayalakshmi and Meenakshi won the last six games in the championship.
