Govind reigns supreme

PANJIM: Govind Navelkar made a successful return in Goa's badminton circuit by claiming the Men’s singles title at the All Goa Major Ranking Badminton tournament, organized by Ponda Badminton Club at Indoor stadium, Ponda.

Govind, who had earlier ended the unbeaten run of top seed Parteek Mahajan in the semi-finals, beat Floyd Araujo 21-12, 21-19 to emerge Men’s singles champion. Floyd came back strongly in Men’s doubles event after partnering with Darwin Barretto to defeat Parag Chauhan and Parteek Mahajan 18-21, 21-10, 21-19 in a closely contested match. 
In the mixed doubles, Sanath Kamat and Emilia Silveira got the better of Parteek Mahajan and Anjana Kumari 21-18, 21-19.
In the veterans doubles 40+, Sandeep Kanji and Kapil Kanji beat CK Ayub and Sandeep Fowkar 21-12, 22-20 while in the 45+ category, CK Ayub and Manoj H beat Vaman Fallary and Pradosh Silimkhan 21-16, 21-17.
In the veterans doubles 50+ final, Vaman Fallary and Cancio Mascarenhas got the better of Peter Tellis and VG Prabhu 21-18, 21-17.
SAG coaches Roy Athaide and Vinayak Kamat were the officials for the tournament. Goa Badminton Association’s President, Richard De Souza; GBA Secretary, Narahar Thakur; Ponda Badminton club officials, Peter Tellis, Sudin Kuvelkar, Rajesh Kukalayenkar were present.
