PANJIM: The Goa Government has approved the names of three sportspersons –shuttler Anura Prabhu Desai and Windsurfer Katya Coelho and Mountaineer Rahul Prabhudesai under the ‘Scheme for achieving excellence in Sports at International level.
However, Goa’s squash sensation Yash Fadte, who had applied for the same, is still under consideration.
According to the sources, only two sportsperson –Anura and Dayne will be the beneficiaries of the government grants. The source further explained that 10 sportspersons are eligible for the same and they had received only three application of which two have been finalised.
The Chief Minister Pramod Sawant read out Katya’ name but sources said that Dayne Coelho is the beneficiary. The source further clarified that Rahul wouldn’t get the funds this year.
It is learnt that the scheme will help the athletes with a sum of Rs 10 lakhs which mainly covers their training, academy fees and travel expenses for national and international tournaments. After 4 months, their performance will be evaluated and further grants released on strict compliance of various terms, conditions and performance. While this scheme is for top level athletes, the Government can contemplate creating another scheme for talented upcoming sports persons.
