MARGAO: A fine brace by striker Maclon Colaco helped Guardian Angel Sports Club, Curchorem thump Panjim Footballers 3-0, in a 13th round match of GFA’s First Division football league, at SAG ground, Assolna, on Tuesday. All the goals came in the first half.
Guardian Angel dominated the game and pushed their opponents on the back-foot. They took the lead in the 21st minute when striker Joston Pereira picked up the ball from hard-working midfielder Quan Gomes and the former flicked the ball over the head of Panjim Footballer goalkeeper Sumit Das.
Spurred by the early lead, Guardian Angel intensified their attacks and fired couple of pot shots against the rival citadel. They finally doubled the lead in the 35th minute when Maclon Colaco punished the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish off a well-measured cross from Joston Pereira.
Two minutes later, Maclon Colaco struck the second time when he beat the rival goalkeeper with stiff shot off a cross from Joston Pereira.
Post resumption, Panjim Footballers showed urgency and came close in reducing the deficits. Guardian Angel had a chance to inflate their tally but Panjim Footballer goalkeeper Sumit Das blocked Richard Fernandes’ left-footer.
Once again, Sumit Das came to his side rescue when he brought up a superb save to deny Maclon Colaco a hat-trick in the 58th minute.
With this win, Guardian Angel collected 27 points from 13 matches while Panjim Footballers stay on nine points from as many outings.
At 3MTR ground, Navelim, Corps of Signals came from behind to hold Curtorim Gymkhana 1-1 draw after trailing by a goal at half time.
Curtorim Gymkhana held the upper hand in the opening session and took the lead through a spot-kick as striker Milagres Fernandes was brought down by rival defender and referee awarded the spot-kick.
The resultant penalty taken by Cliff Baretto was fisted away by Corps of Signals goalkeeper but however, the rebound went to Gladston Almeida, who made no mistake in punting the ball in.
After the break, Corps of Signals were dominant and threatened the rival goal on umpteen times. Striker Pankaj Gurkha’s effort hit the crossbar much to the dismay of Corps of Signals supporters.
Corps of Signals’ equalizer came in the 60th minute when Roshan Singh converted the spot-kick after rival defender handled the ball inside the penalty area.
With this draw, Curtorim Gymkhana remained on 28 points from 13 matches while Corps of Signals took their tally to 22 points from 13 matches.
Goa Police Sports Club and Penha de Franca Sports Club played a 2-2 draw, at Duler Stadium, Mapusa.
