PANJIM: Harsh Sonawane, Nidhi Metri and Prasmit Bhat secured top spots in their respective categories at the Canacona taluka chess tournament organized by Canacona Taluka Chess Association (CTCA) and Unique Chess Academy, at Mallikarjun High School, Canacona, recently.
Altogether, 104 chess players from Canacona participated. The tournament was held in Swiss League System in which each player played seven rounds.
The first 10 prize winners were Harsh Sonawane (Balram Residential School), Nidhi Metri, Prasmit Bhat (Navodaya Vidyalaya), Pranam Pagi (Shradhanand Vidyalaya), Pratap Gaonkar, Venkatesh Master (Damodar Vidyalaya), Ashitosh Prasad (JNV), Yashwant Kaimal (SS Angle), Lokesh Painginkar (Shardhanand) and Aniket Naik (JNV).
The chief guest for the prize distribution function was Uday Desai, president of Centro Promotor the Instriciao. Guest of honour Sudesh Naik, headmaster of Government High School, Sadolshem; Sanjay Kavalekar, SAG chess coach; Ratnakar Raikar, joint secretary, CTCA; Durgesh Gaonkar were the other dignitaries.
Earlier, Ramdas Sawant, treasurer, welcomed the guests. Sharendra Naik, secretary, proposed the vote of thanks. Venkatray Naik compered.
