MAPUSA: Goan Football Club scored a narrow 1-0 win over Corps of Signals in the Goa Professional League organised by GFA, at Duler Stadium, here on Sunday.
After a goalless first half, Hayden Fernandes scored the all-important goal for Goan FC in the 62nd minute to take their points tally to four while Corps of Signals are yet to open their account having lost both the matches.
Goan FC did not have much to show on the scoreboard even after having major possession of the ball in the first half and when they had a clear sight at the goal the Signals keeper Binu stood in their way.
First, in the fourth minute, Binu pushedout Kapil Hoble’s fierce left footer for a corner and then in the 45th minute showed safe pair of hands to deny Lalawmpuia’s well controlled shot in finding the net off a long floater by defender Meldon D’Silva.
The Young Gaurs started the second session in the same vein as the first half and in the 54th minute Nestor Dias failed to guide the ball into the net just from 6-yards off a long freep-kick taken by Imran Khan.
After all the pressure, Goan FC finally got the lead in the 62nd minute when Hayden Fernandes’ sizzling 30 yard grounder gave no chance to the Signals keeper.
The goal was a sudden wake up call to Signals who started showing more urgency but luck deserted them, first in the 67th minute Nim Tshering Bhutia’s free-kick found Kuldeep Kumar whose header hit the upright and then four minutes later keeper Shubam Dhas made a point blank save off a strike from U-20 Brivon Dias and the ball travelled to Harshad Thube whose placement rebounded off the goal post.
Signals have to thank their keeper Binu for keeping the score-line to just a goal, once again stopping Lalawmpuia in finding the net after some good work by Imran who was very influential for Goan FC.
