SAO JOSE DE AREAL: Holy Cross, Boreivaddo scored a solitary goal victory over Matemorod-A in the final to emerge champions in the 15th Sao Jose de Areal inter-ward football tournament organized by Holy Cross Association, Mugalli at the Padribhat ground, Sao Jose de Areal, on Sunday.
Holy Cross, Boreavaddo were leading 1-0 in the first half.
Alviton Silva and Cheston Gomes were the striking force upfront for the Holy Cross team.
The all-important goal for Holy Cross Boreivaddo was scored by Alviton in the 15th minute off a pass by Preston Vaz, with the former beautifully shooting into the net of Matemorod-A.
Thereafter, Matemorod-A tried various attacking moves to level the score. Milson in the 16th minute came close in equalising but Cheston cleared the ball to safety for Holy Cross team.
Post resumption, Matemorod-A regrouped with renewed ideas and started attacking the rival citadel but in vain as the defence line of Holy Cross team was in active mode and guarded their fort till the final whistle.
The winners pocketed Rs 15,000 plus trophy while runners-up had to be content with Rs10,000 and a trophy.
Individual prizes awarded were: Best player of the tournament Edit (Menezesbhat), first scorer and best striker of the final Alviton Silva (Holy Cross Boreivaddo), best defender of the final Patson D’Costa (Matemorod), best half of the final Asily Gomes (Holy Cross), best goalkeeper of the final Luis Dias (Martemorod).
Chief guest Clefasio Dias, ZP member, gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of Fr Richard Pineihero, parish priest of St Joseph Church; Sr Tresilla, BS, Headmistress Bethany Convent High School; Fr Jayson Vaz, Gabriel Oliveira, sarpanch V.P. Sao Jose de Areal; Sr Beina, Sr Jeniifa, Gabby Endro and Anthony.
Earlier, Timothy Coutinho welcomed. Vincy Mascarenhas compered and Francis Viegas proposed the vote of thanks.
