RAIA: Hosts Navelim Sporting Club edged past Sao Jose de Areal SC 8-7 via sudden death to emerge champions in the Bishut Themudo, Jose Santarita Coelho and Franky Pires memorial inter-village football tournament played at Rosary church ground, Navelim, on Sunday.
Both teams were tied at 1-1 in the normal time. Avlon Gomes gave lead to St Jose de Areal SC in the 9th minute. The lead was short-lived as Ashnoy Gomes equalised for Navelim SC in the 14th minute of the match.
In the penalty shoot-out, Nash Pereira, Ronaldo Pereira, Sadroy Costa, Velington Almeida, Darren Piexoto, Aden Pereira and Velon Rebello netted for Navelim SC while Rayman Fernandes, Tyson Carvalho, Stalen Olivieira, Ashnoy Gomes, Draslen Viegas and Austin Costa found the mark for Sao Jose de Areal. Navelim SC were richer by Rs 60,000 and trophy while Sao Jose de Areal SC had to be content with a purse of Rs 40,000 plus trophy.
Former chief minister Luizinho Faleiro was the chief guest and handed over the prizes in the presence of former sports minister Avertano Furtado, Parish Priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim,
Fr Gabriel Coutinho and other dignitaries.
