ICF derail SCR, MEG spikers win

ICF, Chennai defeated South Central Railway (SCR) in a five-set thriller in the second all-India volleyball championship organized by Wilred Leisure Sports Club at St Alex church court, Curtorim on Sunday.
Having won the first two sets 25-20, 25-21, ICF took thing lightly in the third set when the railwaymen fought back doggedly and leveled the set scores wining the next two 25-18, 25-21.
The decider was a see-saw affair with ICF’s Prabhakaran and Omninathan exerting fully to earn points from their hard smashes. Naresh and Santosh put up a valiant fight for SCR, but their rivals triumphed 15-9 in the decider.
Earlier, MEG Bangalore defeated a youthful Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu in a closely fought encounter 27-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-15.
SDATN boys put up a spirited display against their senior, experienced opponents, with the first two sets being closely fought affairs. They never gave up and won the third set to raise hopes of a rally in the fourth, but it was inexperience that let them down ultimately.
Vinod, Surendra and Jaswant excelled for MEG while Raj Kumar and Dinesh Vikram were outstanding for SDAT.
In the women’s match on Monday, South Central Railway beat St Joseph’s, Tamil Nadu 11-25, 25-16, 17-25, 25-18, 15-8. Naina shone for SCR.
Jose Philip D’Souza, Revenue Minister was the chief guest and Fr. Mariano Dias assistant parish priest the guest of honour. Reginaldo Lourenco, MLA presided.
