CALANGUTE: Saligao United scored a solitary goal victory over Friends XI, Vaddem in the inaugural match of Honeybee Friendship Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Candolim Sports Club, at Dr. Gustavo Monteiro Stadium, Candolim, Sunday.
The teams started on a promising note and came close to score on couple of occasions but their forwards failed to capitalize on the chances that came their way.
Saligao took the lead in the 18th minute through Jason John whose power packed shot hit the cross bar and entered the net. Saligao almost doubled the lead in the 40th minute but Cliffton D’Souza try off Abhijeet Govekar sailed inches over the bar.
With heavy downpour, the play was mostly restricted to midfield and there was no addition to the score.
Earlier, the Marketing Manager of Honeybee Shaurya Sharma kicked off the tournament in presence of Nolan D’Souza, Area Head and President of Candolim Sports Club Lawrie Fernandes.
