Kerensky ‘Dunne’ in by strange verdict

PANJIM: Kerensky Fernandes lost her Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) bout against Robyn Dunne  of Canada in the cruelest of fashions – a split decision.

More heartbreaking was that the 23-year-old Goan-born fighter based in London dominated through all three rounds against her 37-year-old opponent in the Pallas Athena Women’s Fighting Championship event.

“I feel the fight went in my favour but I don’t know what happened when it reached the judges scorecard,” Kerensky, who hails from Cansaulim, said from Calgary, Canada.

“I caught her with clean shots. In the last round, I even shot for a takedown. All who watched felt I won.”

Kerensky reflected on the bout at Winsport Event Centre held late on Saturday.  Fighting for Great Britain Top Team (GBBT) in the 115lbs category, she said she landed some clean, straight shots in round one and slit Dunne’s eye open.

She, however, appeared to recover from the shock verdict. “We move on. I want to keep active in fighting now,” she said.
