PANJIM: Khobra Vaddo defeated Naika Vaddo Calangute by a solitary goal to emerge winners of the 17th Aleixo Joao Menezes Memorial Cup Calangute Vetarans Inter-ward football tournament, organised by Calangute United and played at Calangute Association ground, on Sunday.
Witnessed by a large crowd, the match started on an attacking note. Despite end to end football, both the teams failed to capitalise their chances and walked into lemon break in a goalless draw.
Changing over, both the teams pressed hard to find the winner. The match winning goal came just ten minutes before the final whistle when Thomas D’souza scored from a hand shaking distance with only the rival keeper at his mercy.
The winners and runners-up were awarded Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.
Minister for Housing and Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar was the chief guest for the final and gave away prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of Goa Legislative Assembly Dy Speaker and Calangute MLA Micheal Lobo, St Alex Churh, Calangute Parish Priest Cipriano Da Silva, Calangute Association president Alirio Lobo and other dignitaries.
