Kulmaya, Bicholim scored a hard fought 3-2 victory over Usgao to clinch the glittering Ramesh Salgaocar Memorial Volleyball Trophy

PANJIM: Kulmaya, Bicholim scored a hard fought 3-2 victory over Usgao to clinch the glittering Ramesh Salgaocar Memorial Volleyball Trophy organized by Saipem Sports Club, Candolim at Saipem floodlight court.

Kulmaya won the first two sets 25-23, 25-19. Usgao fought back brilliantly and won the third and fourth set 29-27, and 25-22 respectively. Kulmaya had the last laugh and clinched the decider 15-11.

Pappu Dhawaskar excelled for Kulmaya while Vincent Pereira played well for Usgao.

Kulmaya received Rs 22,122 while Usgao had to be content with Rs 15,151.

Other prizes – Most promising team: St Cruz Six. Best smasher: Pappu (Kulmaya). Best all-rounder: Aaron Pereira (Usgao). Best lifter: Saish (Kulmaya). Oldest player of the tournament: Avelino Pereira (Usgao).

Superintendent of police, Bosco George was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Suraj Morascar, guest of honour. Hugo Gonsalves, vice-president of Goa Volleyball Association, Lalita Baba Kerkar, Sandeep Bandodkar, Uday Naik, Amit and Babu Kerkar were among those present.

Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Revati Salgaocar, widow of Ramesh Salgaocar. John Fernandes compered and welcomed. The Goa Police Band was in attendance for the finals.

Earlier in the girls exhibition match, Arpora United defeated St Cruz Six Girls 2-0.

In all, eight teams participated.
