GURGAON, APRIL 4
Shillong Lajong FC defeated favourites ONGC, Mumbai 1-0 in their Round II,ONGC 2nd Division League match played at Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, Gurgaon on Saturday.
The young team of Shillong Lajong went into the match needing a win after their loss to Viva Sports in the first match, while ONGC had already won their opening game comfortably against Pune FC.
ONGC clearly dominated the first half and are to be blamed, for the missed chances including a penalty to equalise in the second half. Tarif Ahmed ,Gour Naskar and Mangut Mbwas combined well but missed three sitters in the first half. Lajong custodian R Lalthuammawia came out winner and thwarted all attempts by ONGC striking line. Lajong on their part missed at least two good moves including a good run by Saikhohao Tuboi.
The winning goal was scored by Saikhohao Tuboi through a neat header off a free kick by Samson Ramengmawia from the left flank just outside the penalty area in the injury time of the first half.
The second half saw ONGC stepping up pressure to find the equaliser and even earned a Penalty in the 76th minute when Aibor Khongjee was brought down inside the box by Thrangiki Laloo, and Referee Barun Saha had no hesitation to award a spot kick to ONGC.The ensuing spot kick by experienced Tarif Ahmed was brilliantly saved by Lajong custodian Lalthuammawia to deny the equaliser. This is the second straight loss for ONGC, having lost 1-2 to Northern side in the NE Zone qualifiers at Silchar last month.
Pune FC play Salgaocar SC, Goa in the next match to be played on Sunday.
