RAIA: Guirdolim Club edged past CAC Cansaulim 2-0 to move into the quarter-finals of the 17th All Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup organised by Guirdolim Club at Chandor church sports complex ground, on Sunday.
Guirdolim Club started the proceedings with an attacking mode right from the word go. In the very 2nd minute, a through ball by Mario Fernandes found Laximan Goaonkar beating the CAC Cansaulim offside trap and slotting the ball home to give Guirdolim Club the lead. The early goal seemed to have jolted the CAC Cansaulim players who found it difficult to regroup. Guirdolim Club created a lot of chances but their strikers were wayward much to the disappointment of vociferous Sunday crowd.
CAC Cansaulim created an opportunity in the 25th minute but a timely tackle by Sevaraj D’Costa in the six-yard box ensured that Guirdolim Club did not concede. At the breather, Guirdolim Club were leading 1-0. Changing over, Guirdolim Club scored as soon as the match restarted in the 36th minute with Laximan getting his second goal latching on to a long ball from the right flank by Mathew and tapping in to make it 2-0 for Guirdolim Club.
With Guirdolim Club attacking in numbers, CAC Cansaulim tried to counter-attack and on one such counter attack they almost pulled a goal back but Elvino’s effort hit the upright and went out of play with the Guirdolim Club goalkeeper beaten completely.
Guirdolim Club could have scored one more in the last minute but Kenzen’s lob over the CAC Cansaulim keeper kissed the crossbar and went out of play.
Laximan Gaonkar was awarded the player-of-match by Andrew Ferrao, ex-coopted member of Goa Football Association.
