PANJIM: CM Leon Mendonca and Sayuri Naik won the State U-13 Chess championship in Open and girls category respectively, organised by Tiswadi Taluka Chess Association at Mahalaxmi vachan Mandir, Panjim, on Sunday.
Top seed Leon was too good and no one could stop him scoring 6 points out of 6 rounds. He remained undefeated in the tournament.
In the girls category, 4th seeded AFM Sayuri Naik with 6 wins and 1 draw became the champion.
Om Barde (6 points) stood second and Devesh Anand Naik(6 points) finished third in open category while WCM Gunjal Chopdekar (6 points) stood second and Tanvi Hadkonkar (5.5 points) finished third in the girls category.
The top two players in each category will represent Goa in the National U-13 Chess Championship.
Siddharth Kunkolienkar (Chairman of EDC) was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Kishor Bandekar (Secretary GCA & Treasurer AICF), Laxmidas Manerkar (Treasurer Mahalaxmi Vachan Mandir), Mahesh Candolkar (President TTCA), Arvind Mhamal (Secretary TTCA), Dattaram Pinge (Treasurer TTCA) and other dignitaries.
