CHICALIM: Loyola HSl, Margao beat Gaurdian Angel HS, Sanvordem by a 1-0 deficit to enter the finals of the 4th all-Goa Baptist Fernandes Memorial inter-school football tournament organised by Goa Soccer Centre, played at the Chicalim Panchayat ground, Chicalim, on Tuesday.
Loyola scored the all important goal in the 10th minute of the first half through Ashvy Carvalho. Gaurdian Angel who were outstanding in the initial rounds put in a great effort but the equaliser eluded them.
Former Salgaocar SC & State footballer Tiago Fernandes kicked off the tournament in the presence of Ex. State football coach, M. M. Muthawali and president of Goa Soccer Centre Francisco Nunes (Shikeet).
The tournament organised in memory of late Baptist Fernandes, a former Dempo SC, State and National school player besides being a SAG Football coach sees the hidden talent in the age group of U-12 year.
16 teams battled it out for a place in the finals from Group A.
In the quarter-finals matches played, Bethany Convent, Sao Jose de Areal lost to Loyola HS, Margao 1-3 via the tie-breaker and Gaurdian Angel High School, Sanvordem beat strong contenders Fr Agnel High School, Pilar 4-1 via the tie-breaker.
In the earlier rounds, Mae de Pobres, Nuvem beat K. Vidyalaya, Bambolim, OLPS, Cortalim beat St. Xaviers HS Moira, Bethany Convent beat St. Xaviers HS, Velim, Loyola beat OLPS Convent Navelim, Fr Agnel, Pilar beat St Jude’s, Betalbatim, St Joseph HS, Aquem lost to Holy Rosary, Nuvem, Gaurdian Angel beat Regina Martyrum, Assolna, St Anthony’s HS Majorda lost to Manovikas HS, Margao.
