CURTORIM: Macwil Fernandes from Curtorim, a young footballer from Goa has been chosen for a unique football scholarship which is part of an initiative aimed at forging closing links between India and the UK.
The 19 years old was named player-of-the-tournament at the annual Martin Cup football tournament which has been played for 30 years at the Betalbatim sports ground.
Fernandes will travel to England and participate in a week long training involving Premier League clubs in September 2019.
According to Goan Indian origin British MP Keith Vaz from Leicester, the patron of the initiative informed, “I am delighted that Macwil Fernandes has been selected to participate in this unique initiative. The Premier League is followed closely in Goa and many members of the Goan diaspora in the UK avidly follow football in Goa. I hope that Macwil will benefit from this great opportunity and I thank the Martin Cup organisers for choosing him. I hope that the Martins Cup Player of the Tournament will always be able to able to benefit from this important scheme.”
Further details of the training programme will be announced in April.
