MARGAO: Mahadev Talwar and Roger Azavedo scored crucial goals to guide Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda to a 2-1 win over hosts Chandor Club in the finals of 41st Chandor Seamen Rolling Trophy all-Goa inter-village football tournament, at Chandor ground, Sunday. Don Bosco Oratory led 1-0 at half time.
The teams displayed attacking brand of soccer and kept the crowds on their toes. Don Bosco Oratory richly deserved the accolades for putting up a gritty show and for not allowing the home side to make a comeback into the game.
Don Bosco Oratory took the lead in the 15th minute after winger Francis Andrade floated a flag-kick to Mahadev, who nodded home, 1-0.
Stung by the setback, Chandor mounted tremendous pressure on their rival’s citadel and came close in levelling the score but their forwards were guilty of misfiring from hand-shaking distance.
Chandor Club came back with determination after changing ends. Their response came soon after resumption when striker Moses D’Sa punished the rival goalkeeper with a neat finish.
Chandor nearly sealed the rival fate but Moses shot wide much to the disbelief of Chandor supporters.
The match-winner came late in the second half when striker Roger Azavedo picked up the ball from Minguel Baretto and placed it into the far post.
Don Bosco Oratory were richer by Rs 41,000 and a glittering trophy while hosts Chandor Club had to settle for Rs 31,000.
Individual prizes were awarded to Best goalkeeper of the final Blington Baretto of DBO, Best Defender of the finals Ivon Pinto of Chandor Club, Best Forward of the final Roger Azavedo of DBO, Man-of-the-match Stanley Hadagali of Chandor Club, Best Player of the tournament Moses D’Sa of Chandor Club, Dedicated player of Chandor Club Sevaraj D’Costa, Fair play team of the tournament ICSC Paroda.
Joaquim Alemao, former Urban Development Minister and Cuncolim MLA was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence guest of honour Seema Dias, ZP Guirdolim constituency; Fr Saude Pereira, parish priest of Chandor church; Fr Salvador Coutinho; Etelvina Travasso, Chandor Sarpanch and Sonia Dias, Guirdolim Sarpanch.
