BENAULIM: Maina Sports Club, Curtorim struck twice in the closing stages of the match to blank St Rock Majorda 2-0 to enter the quarter-finals of the 12th Bebe Costa memorial inter-village football tournament organized by United Club of Benaulim, at St John the Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, on Monday.
Maina SC’s Edwin Sequeira wasted the first chance in the 16th minute as he hit wide from inside the box.
Thereafter another chance came quickly for Maina SC as winger Edwin Sequeira took advantage of some sloppy defending by St Rock SC stopper back Micheal Souza to snatch the ball from the rival player and unselfishly passed it to unmarked striker Myson Fernandes who provided an awful finish by shooting the ball over the cross piece.
St Rock SC midfielder Floyd Fernandes worked hard in the first half and did well to speed past a host of Maina SC defenders in the 56th minute but in the end he also repeated the act of poor shooting from close range.
The match looked destined for a shootout however Maina SC’s Neville Fernandes floated a flag kick from the right which was finished off by a powerful volley by defender Nelson Fernandes to crash into the nylons with just five minutes remaining for the final whistle.
The sudden goal totally demoralized the young St Rock SC team and a minute later the conceded the second when their young goalkeeper Roland Fernandes who had a fine outing fumbled a low cross of Maina SC’s Jemson Noronha allowing Edwin Sequeira to tap the ball from just a yard out to complete a comfortable win.
