Maina Sports Club crushed CRC, Chinchinim 5-2 to enter the quarter-finals of 2nd All-Goa Eslinda Alemao memorial inter-village football tournament organised by Cuncolim Union at Cuncolim ground, on Wednesday. The teams were tied 2-2 at half time.
Maina were a dominant lot and struck good rhythm with well orchestrated raids. Maina netted in the very 3rd minute when striker Jose Fernandes outpaced rival defenders and punt the ball to the far corner of the net after he received a pass from Elvis Cardozo. However, their joy was short-lived as Chinchinim’s striker Ryan Fernandes reduced the margin in the 11th minute off a pass from Cedric.
After a couple of misses, striker Ryan Fernandes who had a good match and was a thorn in the rival defense, was brought down by the Maina keeper inside the penalty box and the referee, without any hesitation awarded the spotkick. Ryan did well to send the rival keeper in the wrong direction.
Serino Noronha restored parity for Maina in the 16th minute. Jose Fernandes struck a second time to give his team a 3-2 lead soon after resumption. Royston Carneiro put the issue beyond doubt while Serino Noronha drove the last nail into the Chinchinim coffin.
