Marcus brace sends Maina SC into semis

MARGAO: Maina Sports Club blanked Betalbatim Sporting Club 3-0 to move into the semi-finals of 26th Super Soccer football tournament organized by United Boys of Dando, Colva, at St John the Baptist ground, on Wednesday.

At first half, the score was goalless draw.
Maina Sports Club and Betalbatim Sporting Club dominated the proceedings in the first half but could not find the nets.
Maina Sports Club in the 11th minute tried to take lead. Placidinho Fernandes, after moving from the left flank, sent a cross to Welson Fernandes, but the latter shot blindly into the hands of Betalbatim goalkeeper. 
Betalbatim had their chance in the 19th minute but Glen Braganza’s header missed the nylons of Maina off a cross by Kingsllee Fernandes.
Both the teams attempted to score but the defence lines were alert till the end of first half.
Changing sides, Maina regrouped with more vigour. They took the lead in the 40th minute through Marcus Fernandes’ rasping shot which landed straight into the rival goal off a cross by Nevele Fernandes. 
Soon, Maina doubled the score in the 42nd minute when Marcus again cleverly chested the ball and slammed a well composed shot into nets of Betalbatim to complete his brace. Placidinho assisted.
With two-goal cushion, Maina were in full form and played with ease. They increased their tally in the 56th minute. Betalbatim defender pulled down Frazier Fernandes in the danger zone. The referee spotted the fault and awarded a penalty kick to Maina. Placidinho made no mistake in converting it. Thereafter, the ball was mostly confined to the midfield.
