Marcus shines as Ponda Veterans take home Chinchinim Cup

MARGAO: A fine brace by striker Marcus Carvalho helped Ponda Veterans to blank Panjim Veterans 3-0 and emerged champions in Chinchinim Villagers Cup Veterans football tournament organized by Union of Chinchinim Villagers, at church ground, Chinchinim. All the goals came in the opening session.

Ponda Veterans dominated the game especially in the first half and pushed their opponents on the back foot. They opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Allwyn Fernandes punished the rival defence with neat finish.
Spurred by the early success, Ponda Veterans intensified their attacks and restricted their opponents to their own half and doubled the lead midway in the second quarter when Marcus Carvalho beat the rival goalkeeper with neat finish. 
Marcus again struck second time to register his brace to give his team 3-0 cushion.
Crossing over, Ponda Veterans slackened their pace and never allowed their opponents to struck the rhythm and look at their goal. They could not add to their tally due to inept shooting by their forwards.
On the other hand, Panjim Veterans were a disjointed lot and never troubled the rival defence. Ponda Veterans goalkeeper had a off day.
Benaulim Constituency MLA Caetano (Caitu) Silva was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guests of honour Quepem Constituency MLA Chandrakant Babu Kavlekar and Velim MLA Benjamin Silva.
The following individual prizes were awarded: First scorer Marcus Carvalho (Ponda Veterans), best defender Danniel Noronha (Panjim), best half Allwyn Fernandes (Ponda), best forward Minguel (Ponda) and best goalkeeper Ishwar Kankonkar (Panjim).
