Marcus shines as Sporting hit five past Velsao

PANJIM: Marcus Mascarenhas double ensured Sporting Clube de Goa register a convincing 5-0 win over Velsao Sports and Cultural Club in the Goa Professional League at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Wednesday.

Marcus scored his first from the penalty spot in the 51st minute and added his second in 67th minute. Earlier, Rohit Totad had given Flaming Oranje a 26th minute lead. Stendly Fernandes and Akeraj Martins scored in the 69th and 86th minutes, respectively.

Sporting were denied an early lead when Velsao midfielder Cajetan Fernandes came with a goal line clearance to deny Llyod. Later Rohit saw his effort sail over the crossbar.

Velsao came close to scoring in the 21st minute when Rohan Rodrigues played a cross in the area where Cajetan managed to get to the end, however, his effort was wasted from close.

Velsao’s keeper Vipin Sharma came with a fine block to Rohit Totad try from close in the 25th minute, but the ball rolled to Stendly, who also tried his luck only to be denied by the crossbar. But there was more to the drama as the rebound came once again to Rohit, who this time guided the ball in the goal.

Just before the break, Velsao SCC had an opportunity to get back into the game when Romario sent in a defence splitting pass to James Fernandes, only to see the latter fire it wide.

Velsao were reduced to 10 men when Leny Fernandes received marching orders for bringing down Marcus Mascarenhas outside the area forcing referee to give him his second yellow card of the game.

The Flaming Oranje doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Sheldon Pereira brought down Marcus in the box. The veteran striker shouldered the responsibility and coolly converted the spot kick.

Marcus scored his second in the 67th minute guiding in a Allan’s cross.

In the 69th minute Stendly made it 4-0 before substitute Akeraj Martins who made the best of the Llyod Cardozo’s effort to make it 5-0 in favour of Sporting Clube de Goa.
