MARGAO: Margao Sports Club overcame a fighting Cuncolim Union 4-2 via the tie-breaker to enter the finals of 3rd Cana Benaulim Panchayat Cup soccer tournament organized by St Sebastian Union Benaulim at St John Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, Sunday.

Cuncolim managed just one chance early on but strikers Rosario Mithun and Daulat Dessai tangled into each other and wasted the chance.

Margao again came close when winger Cliff Baretto sent in a fine cross from the left flank which was shot over by Ashley Araujo. Just as the teams were about to troop out for the lemon break Cuncolim striker Rosario intercepted a loose ball to and had a shoot on the target but the ball deflected off Margao stopper Michael Faleiro and goalkeeper Soccoro Azavedo somehow managed to block the ball. The resultant rebound went to Cuncolim’s Freddy Mascarenhas whose feeble attempt was again blocked by Soccoro but this time the experienced Krishna Shirdkar was on hand to slot the ball into an empty net.

After resumption, Margao immediately restored parity when Francis Andrade’s low cross struck the horizontal and Minguel Baretto headed the ball in.

Thereafter, Margao were in control but could not make the break through. In the penalty shoot out Savio Faleiro, Minguel Baretto and Francis Andrade were on target for Margao while Rosario Mithun was the lone scorer for Cuncolim.
