Masters Women’s festival, 5-a-side tourney today

PANJIM:   A National Masters Women’s football festival organised by Karuna Football Federation with five State teams from Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and hosts Goa will be held at SVD Seminary complex, Raia from March 8 to mark the International Women’s Day.

The Vedanta sponsored festival will feature about 100 plus national and international footballers. It is being played in 40plus and 55plus categories in a seven-a-side format. Goa will play Maharashtra in the opening match on Wednesday at 7.30 am. 

Yolanda D’Souza, a former Goan legendary footballer, chairperson of the event and Kennedy D’Silva, Director of the Compassion FC who are organising the event, stated that football is one of the most powerful platforms for promoting equality and inclusion, and for empowering girls, women and athletes in all their diversity.

The festival is part of the AFC International Women’s Day celebrations programme.

Meanwhile, a 5-a-side inter-school football tournament, followed by a quiz programme and sports logo competition, organised by Our Lady of the Rosary High School at the school ground, Dona Paula will be held from 9 am to 1.30 pm in collaboration with Churchill Bros FC. Carol Gomes, Physical Education teacher stated that five neighbouring schools will participate with each team consisting of three students and two teachers of the school.
