CALANGUTE: Math United, Bicholim scored a hard fought solitary goal victory over Vailankanni Boys, Morjim in the final to lift the Sodiem Super Soccer Cup, organized by Sodiem Boys, at Sodiem, Siolim ground, recently.
Both the teams played an attacking game coming close to scoring on couple of occasions in the first half. Changing over, Bicholim took the lead through their captain Sonam who scored a gem of a goal beating the rival keeper Nestor.
Trailing by a goal, Morjim created goal scoring opportunities but time and again their forwards failed to find the net. Math United, Bicholim won the coveted Sodiem Super Cup Trophy and received Rs1 lakh.
Former international and Arjuna Awardee Bruno Coutinho was the chief guest for the final and gave away the trophy to winners in presence of Fr Carlos Mendes, Micky Fernandes, Savio Almeida (Dy. Sarpanch of Anjuna-Caisua), Nilesh Vaigankar (sarpanch of Sodiem), Babli Mandrekar, Domnic, Joan Fernandes and other dignitaries.
Following individual prizes were to Best forward: Sanket (Bicholim). Best defender: Bruno (Morjim). Midfielder: Keddy (Bicholim). Best goalkeeper: Nestor (Morjim), Player of the tournament: Jason (Morjim). First goal of the final: Sonam (Bicholim). Best disciplined team : 5 Pillars Church.
Earlier, Nilesh Vaingankar welcomed the chief guest and other dignitaries. Domnic Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks. Joan Fernandes compered.
