Milkha Singh, Sania arrive today for Launch of Torch and Mascot

PANJIM: India's Flying Sikh Milkha Singh and ace tennis star Sania Mirza will arrive in Goa for the much anticipated Lusofonia Games curtain raiser launch event which will see the unveiling of the official Torch of the Games, official Mascot and official Games Song.

PANJIM: India’s Flying Sikh Milkha Singh and ace tennis star Sania Mirza will arrive in Goa for the much anticipated Lusofonia Games curtain raiser launch event which will see the unveiling of the official Torch of the Games, official Mascot and official Games Song.

Goa’s leading ladies of music, Sonia Shirsat and Lorna, will come together to perform the official multilingual Games Song. The Games Song has been composed by Goan musician Mukesh Ghatwal and has been has been scripted by poet, writer and St Andrade MLA Vishnu Wagh in the languages of Konkani, Portuguese, Marathi, Hindi and English in order to showcase the harmony between participating contingents.

The multiplicity of India’s rich cultural diversity will be celebrated at the Lusofonia Games launch event through the theme Panchatattva, which celebrates the five elements of nature – Fire, Water, Earth, Air and Ether (Agni, Jal, Vayo, Prithvi, Aakash). The presentation has been dedicated to every element of the cosmos, and features performances of various art forms. Some of the performers include troupes led by Fr. Peter Cardozo, Kalangan, Lalan Desai and Mahesh Gawade. Students from a number of schools will also be joining into the performances. The event is being hosted by Tisca Chopra, Charu Sharma and Siddhi Upadhye.

The team behind the event feature the eminent personalities of Tomazinho Cardozo and Rose Ferns, Ajay Vaiydya, Shridhar Bambolkar, Rajeev Shinde and Satish Gawas being brought together and lead by celebrated theatre director Bansi Kaul.

Goa will be hosting the Portuguese commonwealth games in nine disciplines with participation from 12 countries. Participating countries are Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea- Bissau, Macau (China), Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, Sri Lanka and the host nation Goa(India).

The 3rd Lusofonia Games will be held over the period of 12 days from 18th to 29th of January 2014 and will see participation from over 1500 athletes and officials from 12 nations.
