PANJIM: Monti Benaulim Veterans pipped Albert Developers, Merces 1-0 in the final to emerge champions of the Vasco Veterans football tournament organized by Vasco Veterans at Chicalim panchayat ground, on Sunday.
The match started with Albert Developers dominating the play with ball possession in their favour for most of the part.
Albert Developers midfielder Alex Alvares was impressive controlling the game with his shot passing.
But the first half ended in a 0-0 draw with Alex coming close to scoring for Albert Developers through a free kick which was saved acrobatically by Glorio D’Mello.
Crossing over, Monti Benaulim Veterans regrouped with renewed ideas and put pressure on the Albert Developers midfield and stifling their play.
In the 35th minute, Brian Deniz scored the all-important goal for Monti Benaulim Veterans.
From thereon, Monti Benaulim Veterans went on defensive mode and restricted the chances of Albert Developers with Rommel De Sousa protecting the defence line.
Francis Furtado came close in scoring a late equalizer but his shot went wide and the game ended with the scoreline reading 1-0 in favour of Monti Benaulim Veterans.
The winners took home Rs 30,000 and a trophy while the runners-up had to settle for Rs 20,000.
Chief guest Fr Gabriel Coutinho gave away the prizes.
