CHINCHINIM: Mount Mary High School, Chinchinim defeated St Jude High School, Betalbatim by a solitary goal in the final of the St Joseph Vaz Inter-School Football tournament, at Chinchinim ground, recently.
Mount Mary scored through a powerful grounder by Melroy Colaco which deflected off Simplicio Costa and sailed into the nets of St Jude HS in the 15th minute.
Thereafter, St Jude HS tried hard to equalize but Simplicio’s long ranger flew inches over.
In the second half, Melroy could have secured his brace but his shot was saved by the rival goalkeeper.
Chairman of GFDC, Dr Rufino Monteiro was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Fr Manuel Fernandes (Dean of Chinchinim Deanery), Romeo Fernandes and Keenan Almeida (FC Goa footballers) and other dignitaries.
Individual prizes were awarded to Shambu Hadapad (Most Promising Player of Mount Mary HS), Melroy Colaco (Best Defender and Man-of-the-Match of Mount Mary HS), Denson Fernandes (Best Striker of Mount Mary HS), Tristan Lopes (Best Goalkeeper of Mount Mary HS), Simplicio Coelho (Best Midfielder of St Jude HS).
The Best Disciplined team award was secured by Assumpta Convent HS, Sarzora.
The winners were awarded Rs 6,000 while the runners-up had to be content with Rs 4,000.
