MARGAO, FEB 2
Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) Sports Council registered a 2-1 win over Margao Sports Club in GFA’s First Division League at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda on Wednesday. There was no score at half time.
MPT made it clear from the start that they were not going to let Margao dictate terms, holding their own in the midfield remaining solid at the back.
It was Margao who should have gained the lead early when Gamy Costa was a bit slow in racing the well measured pass from Perrryson Rebello inside the rival penalty area.
After an initial scare, MPT nearly found success but Margao captain Soccoro Colaco foiled striker Kayson Velho’s kick in the nick of time with a neat tackle.
MPT came close in taking the lead when Zico Fernandes unleashed a stiff shot which was well taken care of by Margao keeper Agnelo Gomes.
Midway in the opening session, Margao took over the reins and had umpteen scoring chances to break the deadlock but Perryson Rebello was the worst culprit as he spurned the easiest chance with only MPT keeper Juje Siddito to beat.
Later again, Perryson outpaced a rival defender and shot straight into the rival goalkeeper.
Crossing over, both teams showed urgency in their approach and went all out in search of the equaliser and fired sorties against each other’s citadels.
MPT went into the lead in the 53rd minute when Kayson picked up the ball from Zico Fernandes and the former unleashed a snap shot beating the Margao keeper Agnelo Gomes hands down.
The goal spurred MPT to mount pressure on the rival citadel and doubled the lead in the 57th minute when Rekson Fernandes outwitted a couple of defenders and unleashed a left footer which crashed into the net.
Stung by double blows, Margao regrouped quickly and nearly reduced the margin in the 62nd minute when Parryson was brought down by MPT defender Savio Quadros inside the penalty area and referee Melwyn Costa without wasting time pointed to the dreaded spot and also put his hand in the pocket to flash a yellow but retracted after realising that the erring players were earlier booked for a yellow.
Substitute Fredric Endro took the spot kick, squandered the golden opportunity as MPT veteran keeper Juje Siddi fisted away and from the rebound, Endro blasted wide much to the dismay of the Margao supporters.
Margao had their fair chances to get back but their forwards let them down.
Margao reduced the margin late in the second half when substitute Stephan Noronha slotted past the rival keeper with a stiff grounder.
