AGENCIES, MUMBAI: Sunil Chhetri, star striker and India captain, has been retained by the Ranbir Kapoor co-owned Mumbai City FC for the 2016 Indian Super League.
With 51 international goals to his name, Chhetri is India’s highest goal scorer and is also Bengaluru FC’s top scorer for the 2015-2016 season of the I-League.
Beginning his professional football career with Mohun Bagan, the 32-year-old Chhetri went on to become the first Indian footballer to be part of a Major League Soccer squad with the Kansas City Wizards. He later represented Sporting Clube de Portugal B team. Chhetri has also represented some of the biggest teams in Indian football and has been a part of Dempo SC, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan & Bengaluru FC.
Scoring twice in his second game, Chhetri lead Mumbai City FC to their first win of the 2015 season. With an impressive seven goals last year, which included a hat-trick against North East United, Chhetri is all set to better his game and put his best foot forward this year.
Speaking of his upcoming season, Sunil Chhetri said, “I am elated to return to Mumbai City FC for season three of the ISL. It is a great club with amazing fans. Ranbir, Parekh, Indranil and the entire team have been great to work with and I can’t wait to don the blue of Mumbai and hopefully give the fans a better result.”
