MAPUSA: Riding on a 40th minute goal by Myron Mendes, Football Club de Bardez registered a solitary goal win over Vasco SC in the GFA’s Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium, here, on Saturday.
Both the teams started off brightly and came with several threatening moves, keeping the custodians on their toes.
Vasco SC’s ever-reliable striker Kingslee Fernandes was tightly marked by Bardez’s Richard Costa and Cavin Soares, not allowing the U-20 to have any free access towards the goal.
It was the Vasco SC colts who attacked twice in the first two minutes of the match but an alert FC Bardez keeper Mirshad Koottappunna kept the efforts of Okorogr Praise and Abhil B at bay.
In the 7th minutes of play, FC Bardez striker Myron Mendes ran down the right flank and sent a low cross into the Vasco SC 6-yard box, however, Vasco SC keeper Shilton came with a timely save before onrushing Latesh Mandrekar could do any damage.
FC Bardez came teasingly close to taking the lead in the 15th minute of play when their right wingman Girish Naik made a dangerous run into the Vasco SC camp and set the ball to Alesh Sawant whose effort rebounded off the cross piece to the dismay of his teammates and supporters.
In the 40th minute of play, Myron Mendes netted in the only goal of the match, lead when on getting hold off a pass from Peter Carvalho right inside the danger zone, he made no mistake to fire the ball home, 1-0.
In the injury moments of the match Myron almost scored his brace however his strike off Girish Naik’s cross was brilliantly blocked by the Vasco keeper Shilton.
