Myron stars for Salgaocar

The U-20 striker netted a fine brace with delightful finishes, one in each session while Bikash Jairu scored the third goal

MAPUSA: Striker Myron Borges was in top-form as his two clinical strikers helped Salgaocar Football Club trounce traditional rivals Dempo Sports Club 3-0, in GFA’s Goa Professional League, round five football match, at Duler Stadium, here, on Wednesday. The winners led 1-0 at half time.
Myron gave his team the lead in the 35th minute with a clever chip over the rival keeper and then secured his brace at the start of the second session with a rasping half volley. Medio Bikash Jairu made it 3-0 in the 74th minute. 
Salgaocar are now with seven points in the fourth spot in the standings while Dempo remain in the second spot with seven points. 
Former India international Mahesh Gawli made is long awaited return from injury while Felix D’Souza started under the sticks for Dempo.
The match was only four minutes old and Felix found himself in an awkward situation after bringing down Salgaocar’s Bikash Jairu inside the box.
However, Felix took a moment and kneeled down, looked up at the skies and praised the Lord after Salgaocar’s Thangjam Singh ballooned over off the resultant spot-kick.
The Green Brigade continued to enjoy the lion’s share of exchanges but rival centre-back Mahesh kept his defence well organized.
At the half hour mark, Dempo could have taken the lead when Sahil Tavora’s rasping drive was blocked by Salgaocar keeper Karanjit Singh and the ball fell to Tolgay Ozbey but the Australian striker headed over from hand-shaking distance.
Soon, a long ball from the Salgaocar defence landed in the rival territory and Mahesh was left wanting as he failed to clear the threat, allowing Myron an easy passage. The under-20 striker calmly chipped over onrushing keeper Felix, 1-0.
Just before the break, Salgaocar custodian Karanjit Singh came to his sides rescue after the India international tipped over an Uttam Rai close ranger.
It took Salgaocar just few second to double their lead after the second half was underway. Brian Mascarenhas’ cross was blocked by Dempo right wing-back Shallum Pires but the ball fell in the path of Myron, who took his position and fired a rasping half volley, 2-0.
Myron had done the damage and received a huge reception from the overwhelming crowd when substituted by Scottish Daryl Duffy.
At the other end, The Golden Eagles were working hard to make their way back into the match but could not succeed.
Subsequently, Salgaocar scored their third goal. Duffy sent in a delightful through ball to Ivorian striker Douhou Pierre, who unselfishly squared it took Jairu. The medio’s initial effort was blocked by a rival defender but Jairu did fell to finish on the rebound.
Duffy had a glorious chance to add more misery on their rivals but blasted wide from close range after substitute strikers Dawson Fernnades worked hard to send his striking partner a dangerous low cross that left the rival defence wanting.
