Mapusa: Days after Goa Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant announced the renaming of the Peddem Sports Complex after hockey player and Olympian Major Dhyan Chand, Aam Aadmi Party has demanded to rename the Stadium after Goan hockey legend Leo Pinto

Stating that we must immortalize the memory of Goa’s sporting legends, AAP on Wednesday demanded the only full-fledged hockey turf to be named after a son of the soil and Olympic gold medallist – Pinto, who hailed from Mapusa.

“Pinto is a Bhumiputra of Goa and was India’s goalkeeper in the 1948 Olympics where he was part of the team that won gold for the country. He was one the few goalkeepers to score a goal. Goa has a rich sporting heritage and is powerhouse of sports in the country. It is important that our legends are not forgotten and are immortalized so that they can inspire future generations of Goenkars,” stated AAP convenor Rahul Mhambrey.

Mhambrey further said that across the country Goenkars are famous for their sporting capabilities and it is time that the State immortalises heroes in our State.

“This can serve as a huge inspiration for Goans in generations to come,” Mhambrey said.

“It’s important that we remember our legends like Leo Pinto who was from Mapusa It’s time Chief Minister gives due recognition to our Goan sporting icons. They are the icons for our next generation.  This will inspire youth of Goa and Mapusa.” said Mhambrey.
