Hosts Curtorim Gymkhana registered a hard fought 1-0 win over Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club to romp into the quarter-final of Cayman Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Curtorim Gymkhana at Curtorim ground on Wednesday.
Curtorim Gymkhana enjoyed better possession and exchanges especially in the first half with Peter Pereira excelling in the midfield.
At the other end, Sao Jose de Areal took time to settle down and once they found the rhythm they called the shots.
Curtorim Gymkhana came close to opening the account but striker Roy Albuquerque’s rasping drive was blocked by Sao Jose de Areal goalkeeper. They launched a series of attacks and were rewarded in the 20th minute when Jossie Fernandes punished the rival goalkeeper off a pass from Peter Pereira.
Stung by the setback, Sao Jose de Areal regrouped quickly and instantly took the fight to the rival camp and nearly found the equalizer but Curtorim Gymkhana goalkeeper Agnelo Fernandes came to his side’s rescue fisting away the stiff grounder from Freddy Oliveira.
Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club repeatedly attacked the rival citadel but without success in the second half. They came close to cancelling the lead but Mario Rebello’s snap shot missed the mark by a few inches.
Thereafter Curtorim Gymkhana adopted a defensive approach and their defenders thwarted the rival forwards with neat tackles.
Curtorim Zilla member Veena Lourenco declared the tournament open in the presence of Santan Rodrigues, Sebastiao Baretto, president of Curtorim Gymkhana and Alex Dias, co-ordinator and treasurer of Curtorim Gymkhana.
