Narrow win for Curtorim Gymkhana

MARGAO,APRIL 14 Hosts Curtorim Gymkhana registered a hard fought 1-0 win over Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club to romp into the quarter-final of Cayman Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Curtorim Gymkhana at Curtorim ground on Wednesday.

Hosts Curtorim Gymkhana  registered  a hard fought 1-0 win over Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club to romp into the quarter-final of Cayman  Cup inter-village  football tournament organized by Curtorim Gymkhana at Curtorim ground on Wednesday.
Curtorim Gymkhana  enjoyed better possession and exchanges especially in the first half with Peter Pereira excelling in the midfield.
At the other end, Sao Jose de Areal took time to settle down and once they found the rhythm  they called the shots.
Curtorim Gymkhana  came close to opening the account but striker Roy Albuquerque’s  rasping drive was blocked by Sao Jose de Areal goalkeeper. They launched a  series of  attacks and were rewarded  in the 20th minute when  Jossie Fernandes  punished the rival goalkeeper off a pass from Peter Pereira.
Stung by the setback, Sao Jose de Areal regrouped quickly and instantly took the fight to the rival camp and nearly found the equalizer but Curtorim Gymkhana goalkeeper  Agnelo  Fernandes  came to his side’s rescue fisting away the stiff grounder from Freddy Oliveira.
Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club repeatedly attacked the rival citadel but without success in the second half. They came close to cancelling the lead but Mario Rebello’s snap shot missed the mark by a few inches.
Thereafter Curtorim Gymkhana adopted a defensive approach  and their defenders  thwarted the rival forwards with neat tackles.
Curtorim Zilla member Veena Lourenco  declared the  tournament open in the presence of Santan Rodrigues, Sebastiao Baretto, president of Curtorim Gymkhana  and  Alex Dias, co-ordinator and treasurer of Curtorim Gymkhana.
