rnNavelim Sporting Club beat Our Lady of Gloria Sports Club, Raia 5-3 via the tie-breaker to storm into the quarter-finals of 34th Cana Benaulim inter-village football tournament organised by Cana Benaulim Sporting Association at St John Baptist ground, Dando, Benaulim on Wednesday. They led 1-0 at the break.
rnNavelim Sporting Club were a dominant lot in the opening session going ahead in the 20th minute when Sidney Colaco bulged the net after he received a through pass from Richard Costa.
rnGloria Sports Club tried their best to neutralize the lead but failed to find success due to tight marking by the Navelim Sporting Club defenders.
rnOur Lady of Gloria came back strongly after the change of ends with their midfielders and forwards working in tandem. They created many forays into the rival area and were rewarded in the 38th minute when Allister Fernandes punished the Navelim Sporting goalkeeper with a snap shot off a pass from Vellito D’Cruz.
rnStunned by the equalizer, Navelim Sporting Club retaliated. Striker Jaison Pereira had two clear chances but he shot wide.
rnIn the dying minutes, Our Lady of Gloria Sports Club came close to scoring but Anthony Fernandes shot wide from hand-shaking distance.
rnIn the tie-breaker Richard Costa, Sanford Cardozo, Jaison Pereira and Jonathon Faleiro were on target for Navelim Sporting Club while Vellito D’Cruz and D. Oliveira converted for Our Lady of Gloria Sports Club.
