MARGAO: Navelim Sporting Club defeated Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club 2-1 to cruise into the quarter-finals of All-Goa 42nd Custodio memorial inter-village football tournament organized by Raia Sporting Club at Manora ground, Raia, Saturday. There was no score at half time.
Desperate to break the deadlock, Navelim intensified their attacks after the break and were rewarded in the 40th minute when striker Allister Gomes outpaced his markers and slotted past the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
Stunned by the deficit, Areal got their act together in the 42nd minute when Connie Dias punished the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish.
Stunned by the equalizer, Navelim went all-out in search of the match-winner and scored the all-important goal in the 50th minute when striker Allister Gomes completed his brace with a blistering shot.
