PANJIM: Navelim Sporting Club defeated Don Bosco Oratory Fatorda 5-4 vie tie-breaker to emerge champions of the 27th Lourdes Football Festival Tournament, organised by United Club of Utorda in memory of their past President Roque Noronha, played at SAG ground, Utorda, recently.
Both teams dished out good soccer skills. In the 37th minute, Navelim Sporting striker Avlon Gomes’ shot sailed over the crossbar.
Fatorda’s Francis Andrade had a golden opportunity with only the goalkeeper at his mercy, but he shot wide.
In the 57th minute, Navelim Sporting forged ahead through Sydney Colaco. In the dying minutes, Fatorda equalised through Clifford Noronha.
With scores levelled 1-1, Navelim SC proved to be the better shooters in the penalty shootout.
Chief guest Mahesh Rivonkar Stadium Manager PJN, SAG, gave away the prizes in presence of Menino Da Cruz Councillor of PMC Panjim, special invitee Flavia Noronha, Anthony LC Fernandes President of UC Utorda, sports secretaries Remedios Monteiro and Tony V Fernandes and other dignitaries.
The winners pocketed Rs 40,000 while the runners-up had to settle for Rs 30,000.
Following were the individual awards: First scorer: Sidney Colaco (Navelim Sporting); Best goalkeeper: Selwin Gomes (Navelim Sporting); Best defender: Valito Miranda (Don Bosco Oratory Fatorda); Best midfielder: Clifford Noronha (Don Bosco Oratory); Best forward: Joel Colaco (Don Bosco Oratory).
