CAVELOSSIM: Navelim Villagers Union clinched the SAG Cup, defeating Varca Sports Club 3-2 in the final, organised by Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim and played at Fr Druston and Wellington ground, Cavelossim, on Tuesday.
Varca SC started the match on an attacking note and took the lead in the fifth minute through Joylon Cardozo. At the other end, Navelim didn’t take long to level terms as Avlon Gomes scored through a good floater in the left corner to beat Varca keeper Carmo Rebello, 1-1.
The goal brought life in Navelim camp as they pressed hard in search of the lead and scored through Dalvin Costa to make it 2-1.
Hardly had the cheers settled down, Varca levelled terms through Nash Pereira. The scores were level 2-2 at the lemon break.
In the second Alister Gomes scored the match-winner for Navelim. Despite Varca’s continuous pressure upfront they couldn’t get past the strong Navelim wall.
Chief guest Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao congratulated Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim for successfully organising the SAG Cup.
He assured the club his full help and cooperation specially for the long pending work of the community hall under RDA to be completed as soon as possible.
