PANJIM: Navelim Villagers Union scored a 6-5 win over Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim and moved into the quarter-finals of 15th London Trophy inter-village football tournament 2023 at Goa Velha ground, today. There was no score at full time.
Clinton Niasso could have opened the scoring for Navelim but his hot-blooded shot from close was punched for an abortive corner by the Cavelossim goalkeeper Aaren Fernandes in the third minute.
Four minutes later, Cavelossim’s Alex Rodrigues shot was easily dealt with by Navelim goalkeeper Jeet Gupta. At the other end, in the 27th minute, Navelim’s Nash Pereira long range effort sailed over.
Cavelossim almost broke the deadlock but Maven Gracias’ effort struck the crossbar and rebounded into play with the Navelim goalkeeper Jeet beaten.
The second half was dominated by Cavelossim, but they couldn’t find the much needed goal.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Navelim scored through Clinton Niasso, Mark Gomes, Valinton D’Silva, Prestly Gomes, Velington Almeida and Terance Miranda. Cavelossim netted through Ashley Afonso, Alex Rodrigues, Ashley Pinto, Maven Gracias and Aaren Fernandes.
Aaren Fernandes of Cavelossim was awarded the man-of-the match prize by Paul Menezes.
